About this playbook

Turn training numbers into a one-page update that leaders read, trust and act on.

Who it is for

  • Trainers and L&D staff who report to owners, directors or clients.

  • HR staff who are asked "Is the training working?"

  • Managers who run onboarding or required training and report on it each month or quarter.

  • Owners of small businesses who want a clear picture of what their training achieves.

The problem it solves

Most training reports list everything that happened: sessions, hours, completions and survey scores. They are long, they start with activity rather than results, and they either claim too much or say nothing clear. Leaders skim them and move on. This playbook gives you an eight-step method: find out what leaders need to decide, choose a few measures that answer their questions, check the data, build a one-page results summary, describe results honestly, write an update that leads with the point, handle the discussion, and keep a reporting rhythm with an action log.

How to use it

  1. Read Part 1 for the principles of a report leaders will read and the eight steps.

  2. Work through Steps 1 to 8. Each step explains what to do, why it matters and how to do it well, then gives you a template and a filled-in example.

  3. Enter your measures in the Excel results summary each period. It shows each result with its base, the target, a status and the change since last period.

  4. Use the 30-day plan to produce your first report.

Training reports often contain information about named employees. Follow your company policy on who may see employee records. This playbook is not legal advice.

Formats and file types

  • Printable PDF (37 pages), US Letter.

  • Editable Word file (.docx, 37 pages) with every template ready to adapt.

  • Excel results summary (.xlsx), as a blank copy and a filled-in example copy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special software or data skills?

No. The Excel results summary does the working out. You enter counts and numbers you already have, and the summary shows status and change in plain words.

What if we have no business measures yet?

Step 2 shows how to start with completion, learning and on-the-job measures, and how to find business measures your leaders already watch.

How does it handle results that did not improve?

It shows you how to report them plainly, in the same place and tone as good results, with the reason and the action, and how to describe any result without claiming more than the evidence shows.

One price, yours to keep. Licensed for use within your organization.
