About this tool

Start a new leadership role by listening first: a plan for your first weeks, the questions to ask your staff, your peers and your own manager, and a summary page that turns what you hear into clear first actions.

Who it is for

  • New managers and supervisors hired from outside the business.

  • Employees promoted to lead the coworkers they used to work beside.

  • Shift leads and site supervisors taking over a new shift, crew or location.

  • Business owners who want a simple first-weeks plan to give every new manager.

  • HR and training staff who support new leaders.

The problem it solves

New leaders often feel they must change something quickly to prove themselves. Changes made before you understand the work can fix the wrong problem and cost you trust. This guide gives you a structured listening period: who to talk to, what to ask, how to listen well, and how to sort what you hear into what to keep, what to fix first and what to raise with your manager. It ends with a report back to your staff, so people see that their time made a difference.

Frequently asked questions

I was promoted from within. Does this still apply?

Yes. The guide includes a section on leading former coworkers, with words you can use to explain why you are asking questions you may think you already know the answers to.

How long does the listening period take?

Most new leaders finish in two to four weeks. In a small team of four or five people, one week can be enough. The guide shows how to adjust.

What if someone raises a serious problem during a conversation?

The guide explains how to handle safety concerns and serious issues: act on them straight away and follow your company policy, rather than waiting for the summary.
