The problem it solves

Most work skills are learned on the job, and much of that time is spent rereading instructions, watching others and waiting to feel ready before asking for help. Skills learned once and then not used fade before they are needed. This course gives employees a four-step model for learning any work skill: turn it into steps, attempt it from memory, seek feedback early and keep using it. It works on its own, and it fits alongside on-the-job training from a coworker.

What is inside

E-learning (SCORM 1.2), about 18 minutes, 18 screens, text-only (no sound needed)

• A starting self-check on eight everyday learning habits, private to the learner

• The Learn-It Steps: four steps, taught with examples from a flooring store, an online furniture shop, a heating and air company and other workplaces

• Flip cards, reveal-the-answer examples and skill-type tabs (a new system, a procedure, a conversation, a hands-on task) on the teaching screens

• Three practice scenarios (getting ready for a new phone system, asking for feedback, and keeping a skill you will not use for weeks) with feedback on every choice

• A short quick check (not graded), a "try it this week" plan builder and a final self-check that compares before and now

• A one-page pocket card download and a certificate of completion

How it works in your LMS

1. Upload the SCORM 1.2 zip as an optional course.

2. Employees take it at their own pace; it remembers where they stopped.

3. The course reports completed when the learner reaches the certificate. There is no pass mark. If the learner takes the quick check, the score is reported for information only.

4. Self-check answers and plans stay on the learner's device and are not sent to the LMS.
