About this tool

Bring a new retail employee from their first shift to working the floor and the register alone in 30 days, with plans, role checklists, customer service basics and a cheat sheet built for a small store.

Who it is for

  • Store managers in independent and small chain stores.

  • Business owners who run their own shop and train every new hire themselves.

  • Key holders and senior associates who now train new staff.

  • HR and training staff who want a ready-made, editable onboarding program for store roles.

The problem it solves

In a small store, new staff usually learn by working next to whoever is on shift. That person is serving customers at the same time, so they teach in pieces and skip the reasons. Register and returns mistakes happen in front of customers, and nobody is sure what the new person can do alone. This kit gives you a planned first day, first week and first 30 days, a checklist for each store role, one consistent way to teach every task, and the customer service basics for the shop floor, the register and the phone. Every task is taught with Teach a Task™, a proprietary method of KA Company, and customer service follows READ™, a proprietary method of KA Company.

Rules on hiring paperwork, breaks and payment handling depend on your location. The kit reminds you to check them; it is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Our staff do every job. Does the kit still work?

Yes. Use the sales associate and cashier checklists together and add the stock tasks your employees do. Part 5 gives the order to teach them in.

Can I edit the checklists?

Yes. Every page, including all three role checklists and the cheat sheet, is in the editable Word file.

Does it cover cash handling and returns?

It covers the register tasks a new employee must learn, including payments, returns, exchanges and closing the drawer, with written steps for a return. For a full cash handling procedure, see the Cash Handling Procedure Template (R100).
