About this activity pack

A realistic 45-minute in-tray exercise: work through a stack of emails, voicemails, texts and notes, decide what comes first, and debrief with a scoring guide. Office, retail and service versions.

Who it is for

  • Trainers running onboarding, supervisor or coordinator programs

  • Managers and shift leads preparing someone to cover the role when they are away

  • Small-business owners who want staff to make good calls when the manager is not there

  • HR teams looking for a fair, structured exercise for development or selection

The problem it solves

Most people do not struggle because they work slowly. They struggle because several things arrive at once and they must decide, quickly, what comes first. That judgment is rarely taught: new supervisors learn it by getting it wrong. This simulation lets people practice it safely. Each task set mixes items that look urgent but are not, items that look minor but carry a risk, and items that answer each other. People are scored on decisions and reasons, not on matching one exact order, and four simple priority questions give everyone a shared way to decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one correct order?

No. The scoring guide gives accepted bands and the best first action for each item, and accepts any answer people can justify with one of the four priority questions.

Can I use it for hiring?

Yes, as one part of a fair process: give every candidate the same set, time and briefing, and score with the guide and a second scorer.

Can I write items for my own workplace?

Yes. The Word file is fully editable, and the item template shows how to write realistic items with the right mix of traps.
